Government support needed

Advanced industries develop in places where an integrated set of academic knowledge, industry and people with experience is created. From an analysis conducted by the Israeli Robotics Association headed by Prof. Zvi Shiler, it appears that government assistance is needed to promote a limited number of issues in the field of smart robotics in which Israel has a relative and/or unique advantage. Such an approach can lead to the promotion of the Israeli robotics industry and position Israel as a leader in fields that are still in their infancy. The Israeli industry has an advantage in a unique combination of knowledge infrastructures in the fields necessary for the development of systems Smart robotics, along with the culture of innovation and initiative that characterizes the Israeli high-tech industry. This combination holds the potential to reach world-class leadership in the fields of smart robotics such as health, agriculture, smart factory and more.

The union proposed to government officials, industry and users to establish a center, which will promote the issue of smart robotics. This center will sprout ventures that will become dozens of leading industrial companies, and as a result will bring a general benefit to the labor market. With a budget that is lower than the current budget for individual companies, it is possible to advance the Israeli robotics industry to a world leading position. Also, it is worth mentioning that in the field of robotics there is a departure of highly skilled proffesionals abroad and there is almost no return of experts to Israel. A world-renowned robotics center will be a force of attraction for existing and future experts.

One of the relevant examples for us is Denmark, whose number of inhabitants is smaller than that of Israel. Denmark made a decision about 20 years ago to invest in the field of robotics. Its government budgeted projects at the University of Odense (Odense), a medium-sized city, to establish an integrated and inclusive system of academia and industry. Within a decade or two, the system has become a world center in the field of Autonomous Mobile Robots. Today there are hundreds of companies with thousands of engineers that are a center of knowledge and excellence known to the whole world.

The field of robotics fits well into the Israeli high-tech industry. It utilizes human capital and existing research and development infrastructure in the industry, which has reached a certain level of exhaustion and is looking for new avenues of growth to help the Israeli economy yearning to renew growth. Therefore, the field of robotics is a natural candidate for renewing growth in the economy, but there is an essential need to create an integrated and inclusive system (ecosystem) of academia, industry and users to create real and fruitful synergy and cooperation. A robotics center can serve as a catalyst for product development and their continued commercial development by old and new companies. Such activity may preserve the advanced industries as the engine that drives the Israeli economy and allow the employment of thousands of workers, the increase of the gross product and the expansion of exports by billions of dollars. Israel can be among the leaders in the world in the field of smart robotics.

The Denmark model and Israel

Several countries have already recognized the great potential in the field of intelligent robotics, and they are investing a lot of money in it. Among them are South Korea, the European Union, Japan, the USA, Singapore, China and Australia.

Advanced industries develop in places where an integrated system of academic knowledge, industry and people (ecosystem) is created, which enables the efficient and evolving use of “building blocks”, which are a combination of knowledge and experience. The leading places where a significant ecosystem has developed in the field of smart robotics are the USA (in the Boston area led by MIT, Silicon Valley SVR, and the Pennsylvania ROBOTICS INSTITUTE (CMU), Germany (Fraunhofer), South Korea, and also China, which is today at the forefront of progress in the field. All are supported from government budgets.

Robotics in Israel

In the Israeli robotics industry there are “islands” of excellence and it has a global reputation, at the same time it has not grown significantly. The reasons for this are varied and the main ones are a high technological entry level, a long and expensive development cycle, the multidisciplinary nature of the products and a lack of government support required to build an integrated system.

In Israel, there is a limited number (a few tens) of companies that have created a breakthrough at the global level. There are also a limited number of attempts to combine academia and industry, but they are below the critical mass needed for the field to be considered a significant industry. It is important to note that the companies operating in the field, show high output per employee,  and are export-biased sales, compared to industrial companies, but still, the industry suffers from the fact that there is a shortage of skilled workers and there is a movement of professionals from Israel to abroad due to the lack of mobility between companies in Israel.

The activity in the field of robotics in academia is carried out in several universities. For example, at Ben-Gurion University in the Negev there is an interdisciplinary center for smart robotics (ABC ROBOTICS) on agriculture, health and human-machine interface led by Prof. Yael Iden. At the Technion there is a leading center in medical robotics under the leadership of Prof. Moshe Shem and Prof. Alon Wolf.

The research in Israel is of a high level and receives international recognition, but as mentioned on a small scale. There are examples of Israeli companies pioneering in the field of robots for direct patient care, logistics and more. For example, skeletons Exoskeleton of ReWalk , or a robotic system for performing surgeries of MEMICMED, which was developed despite the lack of an ecosystem, the absence of which caused the duration of development to be extended to eight years.

Main trends in the field of robotics

The forecast of the main trends in the field of robotics focuses on a significant increase in autonomous mobile robots (AMR -Autonomous Mobile Robots), collaborative robots (COBOT), and service robots (Service Robot) – robots with the ability to understand a changing environment and navigate it, while performing tasks for diverse uses. Another trend is an improvement in the vision capabilities of machines (Machine Vision) which allows to increase the cooperation between man and machine and also to increase the level of safety. Also, the expansion of the use of learning systems that adapt themselves and also to an integrated environment of humans and devices is expected. The expansion of connectivity between people and between systems will also be done over great distances. After the Corona era, connectivity has a lot of meaning, and in fact physical distance becomes less significant.

The combination of the physical capabilities of robotics, together with the use of artificial intelligence, provides the ability to analyze, predict and even simulate human behavior. Capabilities and outputs can be improved beyond human capabilities as they exist today. At the same time, streamlining the industry through robotics and automation will make it possible to return production from developing countries where labor is cheap, back to the developed countries. Germany, for example, has already started this trend.

The process described so far is gaining momentum following the demographic changes taking place in many countries. The decrease in the birth rate creates a situation where there are relatively few young people in the labor market, which together, with the aging of the population, results in a decrease in the number of working people per supported person. These data increase the importance of the field of robotics.

It seems that mechanical and structured jobs will increasingly be performed by robots. Some of them will be done in collaboration with workers and others – will be done independently by the robots. In various countries, there is a shortage of working hands in the fields of agriculture, construction, and health, for which a robot can provide an effective answer. On the other hand, when it comes to activities that require more creativity, high and complex behavioral and cognitive abilities, humans will still be required to perform the task. In these fields it will be more difficult to replace the worker with a robot.
Examining the history of the industrial revolutions shows that the technological changes indeed led to the elimination of certain professions and created changes in the workforce, however, in the long term, a variety of new professions and positions were created, productivity increased, the economic output increased as well as the level of general well-being.

The intelligent robotics revolution can't skip over Israel

The field of robotics is a complex field that touches every aspect of life – home, work, shopping centers, education, health, transportation and more, and affects economic efficiency and quality of life. Smart Robotics (Smart Robotics/Intelligent) is the combination of the physical-mechanical together with intelligent systems, capable of learning on the go and while in the process, continue to develop. The technological progress combines artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced capabilities, such as computer vision, collecting and processing a lot of information from advanced sensors and learning algorithms, which together make it possible to create a personalized fit for the user.

We are at a turning point of significant expansion in the use of smart robots, both in the variety of activities and in their level of capabilities. The accepted assessment is that the robotics revolution will affect our lives for decades to come. The integrated systems of intelligent robots that work independently, or together with humans, will penetrate all areas of our lives: autonomous vehicles, industry (including production and control), various uses at home, medicine and nursing, agriculture, logistics and distribution, education, entertainment and sports, shops and shoppings centers, restaurants and hotels, airports, army and police and more.

Understanding and navigation at a changing environment

Intelligent robots include both the physical embodiment, which serves as the body, and the brain that controls the body. The impressive developments in the field of artificial intelligence, which increasingly simulates human capabilities, allow the robot to learn and adapt to the various changes. The main characteristics of an intelligent robot are:

  • High autonomous ability to move in a dynamic and changing environment – the robot is able to operate independently with the person (in many cases through voice) and with the environment;
  • High adaptability to changes – with the help of fast communication with people or with other devices and objects;
  • Ability to analyze mass information – the robot is able to combine previous information with information received in real time, during the operation (BIG DATA). This means that processes can be predicted and decisions made without human involvement;
  • The ability to recognize people, the human behavior and also to recognize the environment in which they are. The advanced technologies and sensors can give a comprehensive state picture, including mental and physical state.
